Voice recognition coming fast; will lead to golden age of search

by Hugo Guzman on April 27, 2009

Thought search was already a big player in the overall marketing mix? Just wait until voice recognition goes mainstream.

As I read through some rumors regarding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 3.0 software release, it occured to me that as the iPhone (and other devices) begin leveraging voice recognition in a major way, both the volume and length of individual search queries is bound to increase exponentially.

Think about it. For the average human, it’s much easier to speak a search command then it is to type it. Therefore, when speaking to Google (or any other search platform) becomes an option for the masses, it would only be natural to see a spike in the frequency of searches performed. Moreover, long-tail searches – likely in the form of questions – will likely become the norm as opposed to the exception because most humans are more likely to include more details in their queries when they’re no longer tasked with typing them out.

Granted, we’re likely still a few years away from mainstream adoption of voice search. Thus far, the only viable option appears to be Google’s voice search option on their iPhone app, but even that is still far from easy to use. Still, those of us in the search marketing space should start salivating at the prospect of voice-enabled search, because it will signal the golden age of the search advertising and optimization industry.
