Summing up SEO in one sentence: What would you say?

by Hugo Guzman on August 14, 2008

I’m preparing for a conference call with our sales organization here at Zeta, and one of the centerpieces of the discussion will be how to describe search engine optimization to someone who knows nothing about the discipline. The goal would be to quickly summarize SEO to someone you met in an elevator or some other public place, where time is of the essence.

I’ve decided to take things one step further and try to come up with one solid sentence. If you had to explain SEO in just one sentence, what would you say?

SEO is like someone’s hand raised trying to be noticed (by the intended viewer) in a sea of people, the stronger SEO is the higher that hand is raised.

I have the same problem every time someone asks me, “What do you do?”. I reply with, “I help people who are looking for our clients products find them through search engines”.

Then the next question is always, “How do you do that?”. My response is, “By focusing the content of the web site around the terms people are searching for”.

To directly address your question: Search Engine Optimization is process of focusing the content of a web site around terms people search for, so that they can easily find the site.

usually followed by looks of confusion when people ask what is Search Engine Optimization… I tell them simply, SEO is a process in which we fabricate the natural search results in “Google, Yahoo, and MSN” to give our clients greater exposure on the Web.

SEO is like building a skyscraper online, the higher it gets the more people will notice you.

In my experience Search Engine Optimization has had a primary purpose of driving natural internet search volume to prospects of companies with a sharp eye on a companies brand solidarity and driving home exceeding expectations of revenue for a client.

So in one sentences I would say,

Search Engine Optimizations primary purpose is driving natural internet search volume to prospects of companies ensuing the maximization of companies brand solidarity and revenue.

Okay a more simple version:

SEO – It’s driving internet traffic to your website by understanding how search engines work and making technical and content recommendations to your website and other online avenues so search engines list your site at the top of the search.

Without explanation:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a form of online marketing which requires frequent content updates and strategic promotion of a web site so to improve the volume and quality of traffic from search engines via “natural” search results for targeted keywords.

* partly borrowed form Wikipedia

With explanation:

The rules by which a search engine determines the quality and relevance of a web site to a particular search term are constantly changing.

SEO is the practice frequently updating a site and strategically promoting it so that its deemed to be of high quality and relevant to the desired keyword and therefore ranks higher in search engine search results pages.

…that was terrible.

This is really hard.

You know when you’re driving down a 4 lane business highway, looking for a place to eat and you try your best to quickly scan the signs in the strip malls to find a restaurant that isn’t McDonalds?

SEO puts a giant, Vegas-sized, awe inspiring flashing neon sign that shoots fireworks every half hour on your restaurant, and gets me to turn in and spend money there.

Here is my go at it:

Search Engine Optimization is a method of increasing a site’s relevance in the eyes of the search engines on specific key terms through a mixture of artistic content manipulation and scientific page sculpting.

That didn’t come out nearly as good as I can see it in my head, but it is a start. I think taking bits and pieces of all of the above would put together a pretty solid definition.
