Get .educated on .edu, .gov, and .org sites

by Bob Generale on June 3, 2008

It’s extremely surprising to me when I hear SEO “experts” talk about how a particular domain extension carries more weight. It’s time to bust that myth once and for all.

For instance, many SEO outfits still believe that a .gov site is a stronger target because it’s affiliated with the government. This may be true but it’s not because of the domain extension, as Matt Cutts touched on this concept at WordCamp 2007. The underlying reason why these sites happen to carry a potent amount of link juice is because the majority of these sites have credible and resourceful content, which leads to backlinks, and in turn helps to increase its link potency.

Hence the term “content is king.”

Since .gov/.edu/.org sites often link out to content that is deemed to be of resource, savvy SEOs can leverage innovated approaches to framing client sites as legitimate resources for sakes of gaining a link. My colleagues and I definitely use this approach when attempting to secure links on one of these types of site, by explaining how it will be useful to their visitors. We’ve been quite successful with this approach.

Sorry for the link building tangent. The main point of this post was discuss the real reason why .edu, .gov. and .org sites typically pass along more link juice. It’s not so much the URL suffix as it is the content of the sites themselves.
